Labrador retrievers and French bulldogs were the two most popular purebred dog breeds of 2020 in the United States.
The American Kennel Club on Tuesday announced the year’s results, which are based on its dog registration statistics.
Labrador retrievers came in the top spot for the 30th year in a row, with over 98,300 registrations.
Nearly 66,500 French bulldogs were registered, displacing German shepherds for the No. 2 spot. French bulldogs have increased in registration numbers by 830% since 2010 and 62% since 2019, according to the American Kennel Club.

To those who might be looking to bring home a French bulldog puppy, as many have done during the coronavirus pandemic, James Dalton, an American Kennel Club judge, offered a word of caution.
“Because it has become one of the most expensive breeds to purchase, the French Bulldog encourages many unscrupulous breeders only interested in the money angle and not the betterment of the breed,” he said in a statement. “These people often offer puppies in colors which do not follow the breed standard and refer to them as ‘exotic,’ which means they would be disqualified in the AKC show ring. It’s strictly a marketing ploy to take advantage of the unsuspecting buyer.”
