Prosecutors ask judge to deny Michael Cohen request to be released from prison over coronavirus fears

The Southern District of New York asked a judge on Monday to deny Michael Cohen’s request to be released from prison into home confinement over fears that he could contract the coronavirus.

Cohen, the former personal attorney to President Trump, is incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, located about 70 miles outside of New York City. He began his three-year prison sentence in May after pleading guilty in December to bank fraud, lying to Congress, and illegal campaign contributions.

Cohen asked to be released to home confinement, arguing that the Bureau of Prisons is “incapable of safeguarding and treating” inmates.

Prosecutors said Cohen “has not even attempted to argue that he is uniquely at risk as compared to other inmates.”

“Nor could he,” they wrote to the judge. “He is 53 years old and in good health.”
