Electric carmaker Tesla may soon roll out new technology to enable a fleet of self-driving big rig trucks to operate in formation across the nation’s highways.
The company is gearing up to unveil prototypes for potential testing in Nevada, according to inside discussion on the topic. The idea of having trucks automatically following a lead semi down highways in “platoons” was first reported by Reuters, which obtained emails between Tesla and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.
The company is expected to reveal plans in September for the trucks, Telsa CEO Elon Musk announced in April via Twitter.
“Seriously next level,” Musk tweeted.
The self-driving trucks may also hit the roads in California.
“To insure we are on the same page, our primary goal is the ability to operate our prototype test trucks in a continuous manner across the state line and within the States of Nevada and California in a platooning and/or Autonomous mode without having a person in the vehicle,” a Tesla official Nasser Zamani wrote to the Nevada DMV.
