Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on Monday embarked on a new national campaign that aims to transform the Democratic Party.
Sanders and newly elected Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez kicked off their 10-day coast-to-coast tour in Maine.
The progressive lawmaker lost the Democratic presidential nomination to Hillary Clinton in last year’s primaries, but remains adamant about reforming the party that the progressive independent caucuses with in the Senate.
The exact dates and locations of the Democratic Unity tour remain unknown. Sanders and Perez are expected to visit states that could be critical in 2018 congressional elections, including Florida, Arizona, Kentucky, Nevada, Nebraska and Utah.
The tour’s inaugural stop in the most northern New England state may not have been a coincidence. Maine Democrats chose Sanders over Clinton in the presidential caucus.
Sanders, who released a book a week after the election detailing his vision for the party, will call for lawmakers and voters to reform policies in ways that he argues help the working class and target corporate greed.
