Murkowski Will Vote for DADT Repeal–If Reid Offers ‘Open and Fair Amendment Process’

Published

Lisa Murkowski becomes the third member of the GOP Senate caucus, along with Susan Collins and Scott Brown, to endorse a repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” The Alaska senator says in a statement: “my support for moving the Defense Authorization bill forward, which includes a repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, will depend on whether the majority allows for an open and fair amendment process. This is a weighty, policy-laden bill that normally takes several weeks to debate and amend. If the majority attempts to push it through allowing little or no debate or votes on amendments, I will be inclined to oppose those efforts.”

If Reid really wants to repeal DADT, he can bring up the legislation as a stand-alone bill. With the votes of Murkowski, Brown, and Collins, the Democrats wouldn’t even need all 58 members of their caucus to vote for repeal.
