Former Texas Rep. Steve Stockman and one of his staffers were indicted for conspiracy charges for attempting to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars in charity money, the Justice Department announced Tuesday.
According to a DOJ press release, both Stockman and Jason Posey, former director of special projects in Stockman’s congressional office, were “charged in a 28-count superseding indictment with mail and wire fraud, conspiracy, making false statements to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), making excessive campaign contributions and money laundering.”
Stockman was also charged with filing a false tax return, while Posey was charged with falsifying an affidavit, which the DOJ says was aimed at obstructing an FEC investigation.
Thomas Dodd, a former special assistant in the Stockman’s congressional office, pleaded guilty to his involvement in the scheme on March 20, the DOJ said.
The superseding indictment covers a period between May 2010 and September 2014.
Stockman served in Congress from 1995 to 2015. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for Senate against incumbent Republican John Cornyn in 2014.
