Gov. Martin O’Malley told the Prince George’s County schools chief that he is considering a 5 percent cut in state funding for public education.
The governor’s office told the Associated Press that the across-the-board cut would save $200 million, as Maryland faces $1.3 billion shortfall in the upcoming budget cycle.
In a letter to Superintendent William Hite, who asked the state for an additional $139 million, State Budget Secretary T. Eloise Foster noted that the Prince George’s school district receives more state education funding than any other jursidication in Maryland.
