Mitch McConnell names 2020 campaign chairman

Mitch McConnell is getting ready to run in 2020.

The Senate majority leader formally announced his plans to seek re-election at a GOP breakfast in his home state of Kentucky on Saturday, the Associated Press reported. The breakfast is a precursor to an annual church fundraiser known as the Fancy Farm Picnic, attended by many politicians in the state and traditionally the start of its fall campaign season.

McConnell also announced Saturday he tapped Jonathan Shell, the majority leaderd of the Kentucky House of Representatives, as chairman of his campaign, per a statement on his campaign website.

“Jonathan has dedicated his professional life to advancing conservative values and has served as both the youngest elected official in the history of the General Assembly and as Majority Leader of the Kentucky House of Representatives,” McConnell said of the 30-year-old state lawmaker.

McConnell, who would be 78 years old at the end of his term, has been teasing a reelection campaign, telling a Kentucky TV station earlier this week there’s a “great likelihood” he would run.
