$250k salary, vehicle for new MoCo schools chief

The next schools chief of Montgomery County will receive a $250,000 salary and a host of other benefits.

Joshua Starr is expected to sign the contract, unanimously approved by the school board on Tuesday, within the next few days. He is currently the superintendent of public schools in Stamford, Conn., and will replace the retiring Jerry Weast this summer.

In addition to the $250k a year, Starr will receive $35,000 in deferred compensation, $18,750 toward his retirement, moving expenses, and a vehicle. He’ll also enjoy health, disability and life insurance.

In his 12th year as superintendent, Weast is receiving a comparable salary, but his generous benefits package rings it up closer to $500,000.

“Although he is not here, I will say congratulations to the picture of Dr. Starr,” Board President Chris Barclay said. “He may be watching us online, and I hope he is.”
