TROUBLE SPOT

Iran Iran hanged two members of an opposition group on Monday who the government said were involved in disruptions after the disputed 2009 presidential election, Tehran’s official news agency reported.

Jafar Kazemi and Mohammad Ali Hajaghaei were members of the Mujahideen Khalq Organization and had filmed huge protests that shook the government in Iran after the vote.

The report said the two men were “members of an active network” of MKO and were involved in postelection riots under the direction of their leader in England. The pair were hanged after an appeals court upheld their death sentences, according to prosecutors.

Iran executed two people last year in connection with the postelection unrest that rocked the country and exposed deep rifts in the government.

Opponents claimed the election was rigged to give President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad another term. Authorities deny the charge and have portrayed the protests as a foreign-backed bid to undermine the Islamic government. Thousands of people were detained after the election. More than 80 people have been jailed for up to 15 years and five have been sentenced to death.
