A Michigan man is suing his parents for destroying what he alleges was almost $30,000 worth of pornography, including vintage, out-of-print films.
The lawsuit comes after a man identified as “Charlie” twice attempted to convince prosecutors to press charges against his parents.
Charlie moved in with his parents back in 2016 for 10 months after going through a divorce, but he later moved to Indiana to be on his own. When his parents dropped off his belongings at his new home, Charlie noticed his porn collection was missing.
After learning his trove was destroyed, Charlie called the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, filed a police report, and attempted to have prosecutors bring charges against his parents. They declined.
Once rejected, Charlie allegedly sent 44 emails to investigators, noting that his former collection of porn was vintage and some of the films were no longer being distributed. Prosecutors once again declined to press charges.
In one of the emails, Charlie’s parents detail the process of demolishing the porn stash.
“We counted twelve moving boxes full of pornography plus two boxes of sex toys as you call them. We began that day the process of destroying them and it took quite a while to do so,” they said.
Charlie is now suing his parents for $86,822 in damages.
“Believe it or not, one reason for why I destroyed your porn was for your own mental and emotional health, his father said. “I would have done the same if I had found a kilo of crack cocaine. Someday, I hope you will understand,” Charlie’s father told him, according to the lawsuit.
