Booker: Sessions has ‘hostility’ toward civil rights

Sen. Cory Booker delivered unprecedented testimony on Wednesday against his colleague Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., in his confirmation hearing to be the next attorney general.

As attorney general, Sessions would not “aggressively pursue the congressional mandate of civil rights, equal rights and justice for all our citizens,” the New Jersey Democrat told senators. Booker added that Sessions at times has demonstrated a “hostility toward these convictions.”

“His record indicates that we cannot count on him […] to bring justice to the justice system,” Booker said of Sessions.

The role of attorney general, “requires a more courageous empathy than Sen. Sessions’ record demonstrates,” Booker added.

“The next attorney general must bring hope and healing to the country and this demands a more courageous empathy” than Sessions, Booker said.
