Trump praises his New Jersey golf club, Korean golfers during speech to National Assembly in Seoul

President Trump lauded his New Jersey golf club as he addressed the National Assembly in Seoul. Trump noted various South Korean accomplishments, such as Park Sung-hyun’s victory during the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open.

“Korean golfers are some of the best on earth,” Trump said Wednesday morning, local time. “In fact, and you know what I’m going to say, the Women’s U.S. Open was held this year at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., and it just happened to be won by a great Korean golfer.”

“Congratulations, that’s really something,” he added.

Although Trump’s comments were met by applause, the remarks also received pushback for attempting to promote Trump’s businesses.

“This is the Trump presidency in a nutshell: there is no official business too big or too important to plug the Trump family businesses,” tweeted Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a nonprofit watchdog organization. “This is why presidents should divest their assets and use blind trusts. With Trump, his own profits appear to always come first.”

Trump did not divest from his business interests upon being elected to office. Instead, he has placed his business holdings into a trust while he serves as president and as a result, he could obtain profits from his businesses upon leaving office.
