BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Engineering students and staff at Western Kentucky University are working to take a remotely operated submersible project to a new level.
The portable underwater device was developed in 2008 for the Warren County Rescue Squad and remains in use.
Staff engineer Ron Rizzo and electrical engineering faculty member Stacy Wilson continue efforts to commercialize a model useable for bridge inspections, cave exploration and troubleshooting.
A grant from the Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation and an award from the Buck$ for Bright Ideas program are funding the efforts.
The team is developing three models of the submersible — a basic model that can be operated with a laptop or desktop computer; a pro model using a 7-inch monitor, a joystick and battery; and an elite model that includes high-definition video.
