Conway: Clinton couldn’t get past her ‘ceiling’ of support

Donald Trump’s campaign manager said Wednesday that Hillary Clinton couldn’t move past her “ceiling” for support in the polls, leaving a path open for the Republican to win the presidency.

Speaking on “Fox and Friends” Wednesday morning, Kellyanne Conway said Clinton topped out at about 45 percent of the vote in many polls. She said the Trump camp knew that was a major weakness.

“Hillary Clinton just couldn’t get past her ceiling,” Conway said. “Her floor and her ceiling were dangerously close together.”

She added, “We saw some vulnerability and softness there in her numbers.”

It was a serendipitous choice of words given the Clinton campaign’s promise to shatter the glass ceiling of getting the first woman in the White House. The Democratic nominee held her election night party in a building in New York City that literally had a glass ceiling.

Conway touted the upset nature of Trump’s campaign, noting that the Clinton campaign outspent the Republican nominee, had a much larger field operation and was widely expected to win. She speculated that could have caused the Democratic nominee’s campaign to sit on their laurels while the Trump campaign refused to stop working.

Conway said Trump was the main driver of decision-making in the campaign, making calls like refusing to give up on Pennsylvania despite never leading in the polls there.

She said the lesson voters can take away from this election is that “candidates matter.”

“There’s no substitute for a great candidate,” she said.
