Sheriff offering $500K of own money in case of dead teenager found in gym mat

A Georgia sheriff is offering a hefty reward for any information that would aid a nine-year investigation.

Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk stated in a news release Monday that he is offering $500,000 of his own money to anyone with any information that could lead to an arrest or conviction in the case of Kendrick Johnson. The 17-year-old’s body was found in a rolled-up wrestling mat in Lowndes High School’s gym on Jan. 11, 2013, with authorities finding no evidence pointing toward a potential suspect responsible for his death, according to NBC News.

“I don’t really feel like there’s anybody out there with knowledge, and from what I’ve seen — I studied all the camera angles and everything else — it was a tragic accident,” Paulk said. “But if somebody comes in with a different view, we’re going to listen to them, certainly.”

The sheriff had previously released a 16-page document on Jan. 27 concluding that Johnson’s death had been an accident. However, the document also states that if someone shows new evidence in this case, the sheriff will “gladly review the evidence if that person provides the evidence and the source in writing.” He told the outlet the reward serves as “one last avenue” for any information the office may not be aware of.

Paulk told the outlet that he has not received any tips since he announced his reward. The Johnson family has said they believe their son was murdered and that his death was covered up.
