Moving past its history as a U.S. Navy bombing locale, Vieques is emerging as a laid-back travel alternative to Puerto Rico’s amped-up atmosphere. Travelers are enticed by its desolate beaches, rustic charm and serene atmosphere – just a ferry ride from Puerto Rico’s pulsating coast.
The promise of isolated white sand shores is enough to lure some beach lovers away from the excitement of Puerto Rico.
“We stayed at a huge resort in San Juan, and although it was fun, I felt I needed a day or two away from all the noise,” said Marybeth Rollins, a consultant from Bethesda. “After a 25-minute flight, we were a world away on an island where wild horses are the only living thing you see roaming the beaches. What a difference.”
Adventure seekers can take full advantage of the island’s extraordinary outdoor activities that include kayaking, scuba diving and snorkeling, but its most prized natural wonder is its Bioluminescent Bay. Declared by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “Brightest Bay in the World,” Mosquito Bay contains microscopic organisms that when agitated emit a blue-green light.
“Just swimming in the bay was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as it just lights up with your every move,” said Roger Sherman, an elementary school teacher from Ellicott City. “But make sure you bring insect repellent — it’s called Mosquito Bay for a reason.”
Underdeveloped tourism-wise and with less than 10,000 residents, Vieques has been picked up on travel-developers’ radar, and changes are under way. Slated for a fall of 2009 start, the W Hotels will be opening, complete with an infinity pool, spa facilities and high-end amenities.
“The W Vieques will serve as a sanctuary with an aesthetic sense that is both modern and comfortable, while at the same time, part of the incredible natural setting,” said Ross Klein, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for W Hotels.
Although the level of luxury is being raised on the island, bargains still remain.
“We stayed in a lovely guest house just a block from the beach that provided us with fabulous and fresh home-cooked meals every night,” said Sherman. “I’ll take a real travel experience over a luxury one any day.”
