Maryland at Penn State in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Halting the Maryland-Penn State football series was an act of mercy. Between 1962 and 1993, the schools played 30 games, 29 of which were won by the Nittany Lions. The exception? A 13-13 tie in 1989.

When the Maryland basketball team travels to Happy Valley next year, the Terps hope for a reversal of fortune.

The teams will meet in the 12th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

Maryland last played Penn State in basketball in 1990, the Nittany Lions winning in State College, 80-78, in a second-round NIT game. Maryland leads the all-time series, 8-7.

Other ACC/Big Ten Challenge games, announced Wednesday, will be Virginia at Minnesota on Nov. 29; UNC at Illinois, Ohio State at Florida State, Michigan at Clemson, Georgia Tech at Northeastern, and Iowa at Wake Forest, all on Nov. 30.

Other games on Dec. 1 will be Purdue at Virginia Tech, N.C. State at Wisconsin, Indiana at Boston College, and in a meeting of Final Four teams, Michigan State at defending NCAA champion Duke.

The Big Ten won the series for the first time last year, 6-5.
