Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh wasn’t impressed with President Biden’s inauguration speech, accusing the Democrat of dismissing half the country as extremists.
During Wednesday’s show, Limbaugh took offense to parts of Biden’s speech that referred to rising threats of domestic terrorism and white supremacy. Biden, who was sworn in earlier today, called for the end to extreme ideologies just two weeks after rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol.
“What happened to unity?” Limbaugh said. “This is not how you go about achieving unity. He has just insulted the 74, 75 million people (who) did not vote for him. … ‘They are white supremacists. They’re domestic terrorists, political extremists, and we’re gonna defeat ’em!'”
Biden touched on the “cry for survival” and called for such extremities as a problem “we must confront, and we will defeat.”
Limbaugh, who is a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, even in the aftermath of the 2020 election, defended Trump’s speech at his rally two weeks ago, which major media outlets blamed for the incitement of rioters.
Trump was later impeached by the House for “incitement of insurrection” shortly after the riot. For the past two months, the former president alleged that he was the true winner of the 2020 election, and voter fraud made Biden the victor.
“Donald Trump was impeached for inciting an insurrection,” Limbaugh said. “As you know, there’s no evidence of this. Trump told those assembled for his speech to protest peacefully. We know that those who stormed the Capitol started before Trump’s speech. The timeline does not work at all. Trump did not encourage any of the activity that actually happened.”
It’s unclear whether the Senate will take up an impeachment trial on Trump, who left office on Wednesday.
In his farewell speech at Joint Base Andrews before departing Washington, D.C., Trump promised he would “back in some form.”
“I will always fight for you. I will be watching, I will be listening, and I will tell you that the future of this country has never been better,” Trump said. “I wish the new administration great luck and great success. I think they’ll have great success. They have the foundation to do something really spectacular.”
