Rep. Schiff to Bill Maher: ‘I would favor doing away with the Electoral College system’

Rep. Adam Schiff told late-night host Bill Maher that he supports eliminating the Electoral College.

“I think we’re better off focusing on discrete amendments to the Constitution to overturn Citizens United and make sure that we can have elections untampered or uninfluenced by excessive expenditures and dark money,” Schiff said on Maher’s HBO program Friday night. “And I would favor doing away with the Electoral College system.”

After Maher told Schiff that many people believe that the Constitution was written by Jesus Christ, prompting laughter from the audience, the late-night host suggested that the Constitution needs “fundamental change.”

“Where are you on that issue?” Maher asked Schiff.

Schiff agreed and said that he would not look to the Constitution if he were drafting a new one, citing several “mistakes” that the original document made. However, he also said that he would not trust Republicans currently in power to draft a new Constitution, calling Sen. Mike Lee and Sen. Mitch McConnell “jokers” to the delight of the crowd.
