Mike who? Poll finds Pence still an unknown to many voters

Nearly half of U.S. voters don’t know who Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate is, according to a new poll.

A new NBC News/Survey Monkey online poll released Wednesday found that 48 percent of voters nationwide don’t know enough about Indiana Gov. Mike Pence to have an opinion about him.

Last week, Trump announced that he had selected Pence as his vice presidential running mate. Pence served in the House before becoming Indiana’s 50th governor in 2013.

The poll also found that 26 percent of voters view him favorably, and another 26 percent view him unfavorably.

Chosen to appease the conservative base, that voter bloc seems to not know much about Pence.

Of voters who described themselves as very conservative, 43 percent say they don’t know enough about him to say if he is a good or bad choice. However, 47 percent did say picking Pence was a good choice, compared to 9 percent who say bad choice.

Roughly three-quarters (76 percent) of voters say Trump’s decision to pick Pence does not make any difference in whether they will vote for him in November.

Pence will give a prime-time speech Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

The online poll of 3,646 U.S. adults was conducted July 15-18, and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.
