Gohmert to compete against Paxton and Bush for Texas attorney general

Rep. Louie Gohmert announced his candidacy for Texas attorney general Monday evening, setting up a GOP primary fight next year against some high-profile names in the party.

The Texas Republican, who broke the news during a Newsmax interview, said he raised $1 million, which days earlier he stated was his condition for embarking on a run.

“As of now, we have the money. It’s been raised,” Gohmert said. “I will be running for the Texas attorney general’s job.”

“There’s more that needs to be done about election integrity,” Gohmert said in response to a question from Newsmax host Grant Stinchfield regarding his decision to enter a “crowded field.”

Among those vying for the position of Texas attorney general in the 2022 election are incumbent Ken Paxton and Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Gohmert said he felt Paxton had not taken allegations of election fraud seriously enough. He also cited the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border as a nagging problem facing Texas.
