Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer has reportedly hired a top Washington lawyer to help him navigate special counsel Robert Mueller’s widening federal investigation.
Trump’s ex-spokesman, who resigned from his post in mid-July, is among more than a dozen former and current White House aides who have retained legal representation in response to Justice Department’s Russia probe. Mueller is also said to be investigating the events surrounding former FBI Director James Comey’s firing and President Trump’s dismissal of his national security adviser, Mike Flynn.
Spicer has hired Chris Mead, a defense attorney for London & Mead, who has a strong record of white collar criminal defense and guiding clients through congressional investigations. The Daily Beast first reported the hire.
Mead declined to comment when reached by phone Tuesday afternoon.
News of Spicer’s decision to secure legal help comes days after he threatened to report Axios’ Mike Allen “to the appropriate authorities” for asking him about meticulous notes he kept during his time working for the Trump campaign and White House. Such notes would likely be of interest to Mueller and his team.
Mueller has previously signaled that he is interested in interviewing Spicer and White House communications aides Hope Hicks and Josh Raffel as part of his quest for further details about Trump’s sudden firing of Comey.
Hicks has hired attorney Robert Trout to represent her during the course of Mueller’s investigation, Politico reported earlier this month.
