All registered Michigan voters are set to receive a mail-in ballot option for fall elections.
Michigan’s Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced Tuesday people can vote remotely for the August and November elections to ensure safety during the coronavirus pandemic.
“By mailing applications, we have ensured that no Michigander has to choose between their health and their right to vote,” Benson said. “Voting by mail is easy, convenient, safe, and secure, and every voter in Michigan has the right to do it.”
There are roughly 7.7 million registered voters in Michigan, with 1.3 million on the permanent absent voter list. For permanent absentee voters, their local election clerk mails the applications to vote by mail ahead of every election.
The application to vote by mail from the state’s Bureau of Elections will include a cover letter with instructions on the process. Once a voter signs their application, they can mail it or email a photo of it to their local clerk, whose contact information will be included on the application.
Applications can also be downloaded online. Voters who want to be permanent absentee voters can also request to be so on the same website.
Absentee voting during the pandemic has become an increasing interest by state officials.
A federal judge in Texas also declared on Monday all state voters would be able to apply to vote by mail amid the pandemic.
