A tale of two shows

In the always hip and trendy town of Annapolis, there is almost as much live entertainment around on Monday nights as on the weekends.

Strains of rock music, blues and jazz spill out from the doors of restaurants and pubs that line the town?s historic, colonial streets.

Tonight, two offerings are sure to make the 30-minute trip from Baltimore well worth the drive.

General Manager Kris Fraser of the Rams Head Tavern & Fordham Brewing Co. offers live music in the downstairs pub. This venue, he explains, is the original Rams Head where local, professional musicians gather to play every night of the week.

“Every Monday night we have the rock group Mike McHenry Tribe,” Fraser notes. “Three guitars ? lead, drummer and bass.”

With a unique and powerful blend of hard-hitting funk, soul, rock and blues, the Tribe live and work in the Annapolis area. McHenry has 25 years of recording and performing under his belt and has worked with such stars as Sheena Easton, LaToya Jackson and Mama Jama. Along with his rhythm section, Joe Glumsic and Ryan Cullen, the group promises to keep the crowd mesmerized in what they call “a sea of funky beats.”

The show begins at 9:30 p.m. and there is no cover. Fraser says the full tavern menu is available, but advises arriving early.

“The [local] musicians find it their favorite place to play,” he adds. “There?s a historic feel, quaint, small and intimate.”

The same can be said of Middleton Tavern, down by the dock. It is here, in the lounge, that local and regional musicians make fine sounds with no cover charge.

“We?ve got Rob Thorworth tonight,” said general manager John Malter. “He plays sultry blues [on his] acoustic guitar.”

Thorworth, according to Malter, is big in the Washington area and has a CD to his credit. His show begins tonight between 9 and 9:30.

Check out the Annapolis music scene any night of the week. Good eats and many free performances await you.
