Schumer pledges swift confirmation of Biden judges

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he will move “quickly” to confirm the batch of judicial nominees President Joe Biden plans to announce on Tuesday.

The New York Democrat said Biden’s nominees must be seated swiftly in order to “mitigate” those appointed by former President Donald Trump.

“We will have hearings and confirm judges to fill the growing number of vacancies on the federal bench and significantly mitigate the influence of Donald Trump’s unqualified, right-wing judges,” the New York Democrat announced on Tuesday.

In a statement on Tuesday, White House officials said Biden plans to nominate 10 people to serve as Federal Circuit and District Court judges and one person to serve as a D.C. Superior Court judge.

Biden said in a statement the people he will nominate, “reflect the President’s deeply-held conviction that the federal bench should reflect the full diversity of the American people — both in background and in professional experience.”

Democrats are eager to begin filling court vacancies with Biden nominees to begin countering the 200 judgeships filled by Trump and the GOP during the last four years.

Democrats complained Trump-appointed judges are “largely white and male.”

Judicial and Executive Branch nominees require only a majority vote, so Democrats will be able to confirm Biden’s picks without any help from GOP lawmakers if everyone in the Democratic caucus remains unified.
