Obama says daughters admit ‘the dangers of cancel culture’ can go ‘overboard’

Former President Barack Obama said his daughters have admitted they’ve seen their peers go “overboard” with canceling or deplatforming individuals who may have drawn the ire of people who seek to publicly condemn politically incorrect actions and statements.

“A lot of the dangers of cancel culture and ‘we’re just going to be condemning people all the time,’ at least among my daughters, they’ll acknowledge that among their peer group or in college campuses, you’ll see people going overboard,” Obama said during an interview that aired Monday evening with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

Still, the former president said his daughters, Malia, 22, and Sasha, 19, have a “pretty good sense of — look, we don’t expect everybody to be perfect, we don’t expect everybody to be politically correct all the time.”

Obama added that there are clear lines and an appropriate gravitas to handling confrontations rather than resorting to public condemnation.

“But we are gonna call out institutions or individuals if they are being cruel, if they are, ya know, discriminating against people,” he continued. “We do want to raise awareness.”

The former president has harped against actions of “woke” culture in the past, criticizing that some aspects of overly politically correct ways of thinking leave little room for forgiveness of people in public life.

“This idea of purity and you’re never compromised and you’re always politically woke and all that stuff, you should get over that quickly,” Obama said at an event for his foundation in 2019.
