The third inmate who escaped a Tennessee jail through an air vent last week has been captured by authorities.
Johnny Brown, 50, had until Thursday evaded authorities by breaking out of his Sullivan County Jail cell alongside two other escapees, both of whom died in a car chase fleeing authorities earlier this week.
“The U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, with the assistance of the Wilmington Police Department Task Force, has captured the third escaped inmate from Tennessee. 50-year-old Johnny ‘Shane’ Brown was taken into custody without incident around 9 p.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2022, inside of an apartment in the area of S. 16th and Dock Street,” the Wilmington Police said in a statement.
TWO OF THREE TENNESSEE INMATES WHO ESCAPED THROUGH AIR VENT ARE DEAD
The U.S. Marshals Service notified the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office once it received information about Brown’s location in Wilmington, according to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office. Following a pursuit, officials located a white Chevrolet Silverado with its Tennessee license plate switched out for a West Virginia plate, the post added. Authorities found him nearby and made the arrest without incident, it continued.
As of Thursday night, Brown was being held in the New Hanover County Detention Center while awaiting extradition, the sheriff’s office said.
It is unclear whether Brown coordinated with his fellow escapees following his jailbreak. The escapees, Tobias Carr, 38, and Timothy Sarver, 45, died in Wilmington, North Carolina, which is about a six-hour drive from where their prison was located.
Carr and Sarver were involved in a robbery at a convenience store in another part of North Carolina before being chased by authorities Monday, according to the Sullivan County sheriff’s office. Authorities disabled the vehicle during the car chase, and the two men were declared dead. Officials did not provide details of how the two men died.

Brown was in jail on multiple charges, such as driving with a suspended or revoked license, failing to appear in court, aggravated stalking, and more, according to the Sullivan County sheriff’s office. Officials had put out a $7,500 reward for information leading to his arrest and said he was wanted on escape charges.
Sarver was in jail for auto theft, unlawfully carrying a weapon, identity theft, and drug use. Carr was in jail on charges of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and vandalism. He was arrested in November 2019 after he allegedly killed his wife, WJHL reported.
