Virginia and Maryland’s governors are celebrating their Earth Day cred on Friday with two efforts for greener transportation.
But is it also Freaky Friday? The Democrat is touting cars – albeit electric ones – while the Republican is touting alternative modes of transportation.
Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the Virginia Transportation Challenge on Friday, calling for state residents to try getting around for two weeks without driving alone. “Sometimes driving alone really is the only option, but not always,” the Republican said. “Sometimes taking the bus or train, carpooling, vanpooling or teleworking is an even better option.”
The state has set up a website to help commuters identify the transportation options available locally.
Meanwhile, Gov. Martin O’Malley was at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport Friday morning to celebrate the installation of eight electric car-charging stations in the airport parking garages. (Four of them are in the daily garage, while the other four are in the hourly garage, BWI spokesman Jonathan Dean said.) He even pulled into the photo op driving a Chevrolet Volt, Dean said.
O’Malley’s administration won legislation to provide tax credits and incentives to purchase electric vehicle charging equipment. Now, 65 charging stations are expected to be installed around the state by June.
