NW school locked down after gang threats force police action

School officials locked down D.C.’s Woodrow Wilson High School for several hours Wednesday after receiving two anonymous phone calls warning of a gang fight, officials said.

The lockdown at the 3950 Chesapeake St. NW campus came at the same time city officials were touting the success of citywide gang-fighting initiatives in Columbia Heights.

At least three D.C. police cars, an ambulance and two fire trucks responded to the school around 11:30 a.m.

Students were locked in their classrooms for more than two hours as school security and a D.C. police gang unit questioned students and searched for weapons, including rummaging through lockers, said D.C. public schools spokesman John White.

White said he didn’t know the specifics of the threats, but they were credible enough to warrant the lockdown.

“It was just precautionary,” White said. He was not aware of any arrests and didn’t know whether any weapons were found.
