Issa Rae, the star and creator of HBO’s “Insecure,” said she’d cancel the popular series if Melania Trump liked it, prompting the first lady’s spokeswoman to say that Trump is a fan of the show.
Former first lady Michelle Obama told Rae in 2017 that she tuned into “Insecure,” which features a mostly black cast, after her daughters Sasha and Malia introduced her to it, the actress told Glamour magazine.
“It was like talking to my auntie,” Rae said of Obama. “It bums me out that I will never have that feeling again of the First Family fucking with us so hard and getting us. If Melania said that to me, I would be like, ‘Well, I guess it’s canceled. We’re not making this show. It’s not ours anymore.’”
Trump’s spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham responded to Rae’s comments Wednesday in a tweet.
“Alert: FYI @IssaRae, @FLOTUS likes your show!” Grisham wrote.
