Three workers die after being trapped inside water-filled manhole

Three workers died after they became trapped under a manhole in Indiana.

The Tuesday incident occurred in Columbia City where first responders found the three men stuck about 20 feet below the surface in an area filled with about five feet of water, according to a news release from the northern Indiana city.

The men were all pronounced dead at the scene after rescuers from nearby Fort Wayne pulled them from the manhole and attempted to perform CPR. It is not yet clear exactly how the workers, who were contractors for a company hired by the city, first became trapped and how they died.

“While all the details are unknown at this time, we will be working with all parties to determine ways in which these types of tragedies can be prevented in the future,” said Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel in a statement.

“We ask that our community join us in keeping these individuals and their families in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” he added.

Autopsies on the three workers will be performed, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
