Va Beach hosting 50th East Coast surfing event

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Virginia Beach is hosting the 50th East Coast Surfing Championships this weekend.

Media outlets report hundreds of competitors are entered in amateur and professional surfing divisions with more than $200,000 in prize money at stake.

Other activities include live music, BMX bike races, motocross ramp jumps, and volleyball, flag football and cornhole tournaments.

The surfing championships began in Virginia Beach in 1963.

Tropical Storm Irene forced the cancellation of most activities at last year’s event.
