The United States Postal Service is reminding dog owners to retain their pets after a dog attacked a mail carrier in Detroit on Friday.
The attack was captured on video, showing the 52-year-old postal worker laying in the street as a dog bit his foot and ankle.
A woman came to the mail worker’s aid and hit the dog with a broom. When that didn’t work, another man beat the dog with a garbage bin and a steering wheel lock as the postal worker screamed in pain.
The dog eventually released the man off-camera and charged another neighbor, according to Fox 2.
The news outlet said Detroit police restrained the dog and ticketed its owner. The mail carrier was taken to the hospital and was listed in stable condition.
“The Postal Service is investigating this tragic incident and working with local authorities. We are deeply grateful to the concerned citizens who came the aid of our letter carrier. Unfortunately attacks such as this provide the postal service an opportunity to remind dog owners that it is their responsibility to restrain their pet in order to avoid attacks against our employees while they are in performance of their duties,” USPS said in a statement.
