After some delay, Alexandria planners have released the city’s waterfront plan, which is available online for public comment. The plan pretty much looks like what the city promised — more waterfront dining, a resurrection of the old Beachcomber Restaurant on The Strand, more public park space, the works.
But what is interesting is that a plaza with outdoor seating, vendors and food carts and a winter skating rink is still planned for the area where King Street meets the Potomac River. That area was subject to a court case that was recently decided in favor of the Old Dominion Boat Club.
But surprise or no surprise, it’s now time for residents — and pretty much anybody who wants to — to weigh in on the plan. The city is holding two public sessions over the next several months to collect input.
The first session will be a public hearing during the Alexandria Planning Commission’s regularly scheduled meeting on April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the city hall. The session will include a presentation from the staff, oral testimony from the community and a general discussion by commissioners. The second session will be held May 3 at the commission’s regularly scheduled meeting to conclude the process.
The plan was originally slated to be released by the end of last year.
