A wildlife rescue in Michigan recovered its tortoise Wednesday after it escaped during a storm last week.
The tortoise, Herman, was discovered missing from his enclosure Friday at Hidden Acres Animal Rescue sanctuary in Cass County’s Dowagiac, Michigan. A storm late Thursday blew his gate open, allowing him to escape.
Search parties combed the area, as organized by Hidden Acres owner Dawn East. It was a local driving along Polk Road on an errand that spotted Herman almost a week later.

Herman had traveled over a mile by Wednesday night when he was found.
“We were so worried about him, especially going in to fall and winter. If we wouldn’t find him now, I didn’t know if we would find him ever,” East said after finding him. “So, we knew at some point he’d walk out, and somebody [would] see him, and that’s what happened.”
