Granholm pleases at DNC with Trump impersonation

PHILADELPHIA – Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm drew cheers Thursday at the Democratic National convention in Philadelphia for mocking GOP nominee Donald Trump.

She drew laughs from the crowed when she impersonated Trump in a comical voice, saying, “Ask not what I can do for my county, ask what my country can do for me.”

She continued, paraphrasing a pop tune by musician Carly Simon.

“Donald, Donald. You’re so vain. You probably thin think speech is about you,” she said to cheers.

She added more seriously, “We’ve got stop Donald Trump.”

“Our next president knows that our nation is a village,” she added. “In a real family, no one is left behind.”

She concluded, “We are stronger together.”

Though the crowd reacted positively to the former governor’s address, her speech Thursday failed to live up to the frenzied performance she delivered in 2012 for President Obama.

Four years ago, in Charlotte, N.C., Granholm made the case for Obama’s re-election with an impassioned plea that included shouting, fist pumps, hand waving, shouting, wild gesticulations and more shouting.

“[Obama] organized a rescue, made the tough calls and saved the American auto industry,” she said, contrasting the president with his Republican challenger, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

“Romney saw the same crisis and you know what he said: ‘Let Detroit go bankrupt!’ Sure, Mitt Romney loves our lakes and trees. He loves our cars so much, they have their own elevator. But the people who design, build, and sell those cars? Well, in Romney’s world, the cars get the elevator; the workers get the shaft!” she screamed, arms aloft.

She mugged for the cameras a bit longer, before concluding eventually with a bit that riffed on automotive slang.
