New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie told fellow unsuccessful 2016 Republican hopeful Ted Cruz to endorse Trump when he speaks at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night.
“I hope Ted Cruz gets up tonight when he speaks tonight and keeps his word, endorses Trump,” Christie, the first of the GOP candidates to endorse Trump, told CNN’s Jake Tapper Wednesday afternoon.
The billionaire businessman had been shocked when Cruz turned his back on him as the race for the nomination became more heated during primary season, Christie said.
“He was kissing Donald’s rear end for the first six months of the campaign. They’re doing rallies together on Capitol Hill,” Christie said. “He thought Ted was being honest when he said all these nice things about Donald and then all of a sudden he starts attacking Donald. And I remember Donald called, he said, ‘I thought this guy liked me.’ I said ‘he never liked you, are you kidding? He never liked you, he was faking it.'”
Cruz finished second of the 17 Republican presidential candidates, but Ohio Gov. John Kasich was the final one to dropout, though he had weaker finishes in the majority of primaries than Cruz did.
