Climber’s body recovered at Mount Rainier National Park after he fell to his death

Officials at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state say they have found the body of a Canadian climber who fell to his death from a trail on Monday.

The park says it identified the body of Chun Hui Zhang, 52, from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, as the one that fell from the Disappointment Cleaver route on Mount Rainier.

“Several unsuccessful attempts were made by mountain climbing guides and National Park Service (NPS) rangers to locate the fallen climber. Zhang was located the following day by a team of NPS rangers. Using an NPS-contracted helicopter, rangers were able to access and extricate the climber’s body,” the national park said in a statement.

Zhang was “on a private, recreational summit climb of Mount Rainier with friends,” park officials said.

The park also stated that staff from the International Mountain Guides and Rainier Mountaineering helped retrieve Zhang.

The death comes months after park rangers rescued two trapped climbers in May. Deep snow and strong winds made the May rescue at Kautz climbing route difficult, according to park officials.
