Since its formation in 1997, The Family Tree, which targets child abuse and neglect, has been one of Maryland?s largest and most effective nonprofits. For Patricia K. Cronin, who is the organization?s executive director, the new year brings a call for continued success.
“Every year 30,000 Maryland children are reported to the Department of Social Services with suspicions of having been abused or neglected,” Cronin said. “In 2008, The Family Tree wants a Maryland that is focused on strong families ? children with dedicated adults involved in their lives, living in vibrant neighborhoods, and parents who are connected to the necessary resources throughout the child-rearing years.”
With that in mind, Socially Speaking is making The Learning Tree?s April 14 fundraiser ? although it?s three months away ? the Pick of the Week. Why so early? This event sells out quickly, and this is a must-attend event for a super cause.

MARATHON EFFORT
University of Maryland junior Allison Fleming, 21, of Elkridge went to Orlando, Fla., this past weekend to compete in the Walt Disney World Marathon. Her mission was two-fold: to finish, of course; and to raise as much money as possible for Maryland Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “Well, she made it,” said proud parents, Mary and Hank Fleming. Her time for the 26.2-mile run was 4:45:48, but more importantly, she raised more than $4,000 for a most worthy cause.
