Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., President-elect Trump’s choice to be attorney general, pledged to recuse himself on any matters or decisions to investigate former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“The proper thing for me to do would be to recuse myself in anything involving Secretary Clinton that were raised in the campaign,” Sessions testified in response to a question from Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.
Grassley said the issue was so important that he needed to ask a follow-up question to clarify the matter. He asked Sessions whether he would officially recuse himself from Clinton-related matters, a more formal process than what Attorney General Loretta Lynch did when she deferred the Clinton matters to FBI Director James Comey last year.
“No, she did not officially recuse and there is a procedure for that for me to follow,” Sessions said, assuring the committee that he would follow the formal procedure “We can never have a political dispute turning to a criminal dispute.”
