Jeff Flake’s camp fires back at Trump: The president won’t figure into tax reform vote

Sen. Jeff Flake’s camp fired back at President Trump after the president said Flake wouldn’t vote for his tax reform plan because his political career is over and he has nothing to lose.

“Sen. Flake is still reviewing the tax reform bill on its merits. How he votes on it will have nothing to do with the President,” a spokesman told the Washington Examiner in an email.

Trump tweeted a shot at Flake Sunday after the Arizona senator was caught on a hot microphone saying the Republican Party will be “toast” if it become the party of Trump and Roy Moore.

“Sen. Jeff Flake(y), who is unelectable in the Great State of Arizona (quit race, anemic polls) was caught (purposely) on ‘mike’ saying bad things about your favorite President,” Trump tweeted. “He’ll be a NO on tax cuts because his political career anyway is ‘toast,’ Trump said in a Sunday night tweet.”

Trump and Flake have often been at odds during the election and Trump’s first months in office. While Flake has often voted in favor of Trump’s nominees and policy proposals, he’s spoken out about Trump’s tweets and manner of dealing with world leaders and other lawmakers.

Flake is not running for re-election for his seat in Arizona, mostly because he felt he would have to get closer to Trump in order to get elected.
