Donald Trump holds a narrow lead over Hillary Clinton in a new Indiana poll released on Friday.
The Monmouth University’s poll showed Trump has a 4-point lead on Clinton, 45-41, among likely Indiana voters, and the poll has a 4.9-point margin of error. Trump’s lead has dwindled from 11 percentage points in August.
“Trump’s support in his running mate’s home state was already eroding before the latest bombshell hit,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, in a statement. “Given the large amount of ticket splitting, it appears that some voters are actually voting more for Pence than Trump at the top of the ballot.”
Monmouth’s polling, conducted Oct. 11-13, suggests that new accusations of sexual assault against Trump published this week by the New York Times has changed Hoosier voters’ minds.
Trump led Clinton by 7 percentage points in polling done on Tuesday and Wednesday, 45-38, but Clinton pulled ahead by 2 points, 46-44, among interview respondents on Thursday evening.
The poll also showed former Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh ahead of Republican Congressman Todd Young by 6 percentage points, 48-42, in the race to replace retiring GOP Sen. Dan Coats.
The Monmouth University Poll surveyed 402 likely Indiana voters.
