Baby boy born during rush hour on Interstate 270

A woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy alongside southbound Interstate 270 around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer said.

A Kensington-Parkwood Elementary School health-room technician named Tammi Fischer on her way to work pulled over to help with the delivery after she spotted the father-to-be frantically trying to call for help on a cell phone, Piringer said.

Paramedics arrived minutes later and mother and baby were taken to Shady Grove Hospital, Piringer said. The mother is Fany Chavez of Laytonsville, Md. The baby has been named Vieribeckan Bueso Chavez. “The father was delighted,” Piringer said. “He gave everyone a thumbs up.” –Courtney Mabeus

Fake officer steals money, electronics from apartments

A man claiming to be an undercover Alexandria police officer stole cash and electronic items from people at an apartment complex Friday night. The fake officer robbed a 42-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy at the apartments on the 6000 block of Tower Court between 9:50 and 10:10 p.m. Police have extra patrols looking for the man, police Lt. Jamie Bartlett said. The suspect is described as a black man in his early 20s, nearly 6 feet tall. – Maria Hegstad

Man charged with slashing tiresin Arlington

A man allegedly slashed the tires of cars parked in south Arlington early Sunday morning. The tires of 18 cars parked on the 800 and 900 blocks of S. Arlington Mill Drive, the 1000 block of S. Frederick Street, and the 4700 block of Columbia Pike were slashed, according to a police report. The suspect may have a mental handicap, Arlington Detective Steve Gomez said. Remy F. Dillenseger, 57, of Arlington, was charged with two counts of destruction of property. –
