Walmart protestors out again in D.C.

About 75 people gathered Monday in front of the John A. Wilson Building to demand that Walmart pay its workers well when it arrives in the District.

The world’s largest retailer is planning to open four stores in the District. The final locations have not yet been determined, but they will be smaller than the suburban mega-stores and will mostly sell groceries.

Monday’s union-backed protest demanded fair wages and health care coverage from Walmart.

Another group of protesters, composed mostly of local college students, has targeted the home of a developer who has said he is planning to work with the company. That group has taken a more hardline stance, demanding Walmart stay out of the city entirely.

Walmart has broad support on the D.C. Council and has said it will pay its workers the going rate in the District.
