More officers deployed to AC’s Tourism District

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — State officials say 20 new police officers have been deployed in Atlantic City, where they will help provide an enhanced law enforcement presence in the city’s Tourism District.

The new special officers have full police powers, but are paid by the hour and subject to certain service restrictions. Authorities say they will help make the area around the casinos safer and more comfortable for visitors.

The casinos are a key engine for the state’s economy.

The Atlantic City Police Department will deploy roughly six to eight of the special officers per shift in the Tourism District. The district is already patrolled by more than 50 regular city officers, along with a 10-member tactical unit that conducts quality-of-life enforcement patrols in and around the area.
