Schumer: Trump will fail on taxes too because he lacks basic competence

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer predicted Sunday that President Trump’s effort to reform taxes would fail for the same reason that the healthcare push failed — namely dissent within the Republican Party.

“They’re going to repeat the same mistake they made on healthcare with tax reform,” the New York Democrat said on ABC’s This Week.

Trump faces two problems in passing taxes, Schumer said.

One is a “basic lack of competence,” Schumer said. “You cannot run the presidency like a real estate deal,” he explained, saying that Trump wouldn’t find success through tweeting.

The other is that Trump will run afoul of public opinion if he tries to bring congressional GOP conservatives on board, losing moderates within the party as well as Democrats.

Trump, Schumer said, is going to have to learn to say “no” to the “hard-right.”

His inability to do so was one of the underlying problems with Trump’s failed attempt to replace Obamacare, Schumer said. “The American people hated Trumpcare,” he quipped.
