Nancy Pelosi: ‘America’s in tears’ over losing the ‘great’ John McCain

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi hailed the late Sen. John McCain as a “great man” on Sunday, describing the Arizona Republican as a pillar of political and personal strength.

“I will remember John McCain as a source of great strength to our country, his personal strength, and the strength of his love of our country and his love of peace,” Pelosi said during an interview with ABC’s “This Week.” “Right now I’m just heartbroken. I think America’s in tears about the loss of this great man.”

“With all of his strength and pride, he had a sense of humility of understanding other people’s point of view,” the California Democrat continued.

Pelosi joined a growing chorus of lawmakers who expressed support for a proposal suggested by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., that the Russell Senate Office Building be renamed to honor McCain.

“I think it would be a great tribute because then for decades to come everyone who [comes] to Washington would know the very special place that John McCain held, has held, and will continue to hold in our country,” she added.

McCain died on Saturday at the age of 81 following a yearlong battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
