Gray sets start date for medical marijuana in D.C.

D.C. Mayor Vince Gray has scheduled April 15 as the start date for the city’s medical marijuana program, although it could be delayed if the District is shutdown along with the federal government.

Former Mayor Adrian Fenty and now Gray have been hammering out the rules to govern the program that was allowed to move forward by congressional Democrats in 2009 following a 1998 referendum in the city approving it.

“District residents suffering from painful conditions like cancer and HIV/AIDS will soon have one more option to help relieve their symptoms,” Gray said in a statement.

Rules the Fenty administration developed called for five dispensaries and 10 cultivation centers. Gray did not say if he would stick with that aspect of the plan. He did say that the Department of Health will accept applications for cultivation centers and dispensaries as well as process patient registration.
