Two local transit officials on national rail safety group

Two local transit officials have been chosen to serve on the newly-formed Transit Rail Advisory Committee for Safety (TRACS), which was announced Wednesday by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood.

Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority’s Chief Safety Officer James Dougherty is serving on the board, as well as Amalgamated Transit Union local leader Jackie Jeter.

The creation of the board comes in the wake of the Obama administration’s support for the Public Transportation Safety Program Act of 2010, which if passed through Congress, would allow the DOT to establish federal safety standards for rail transit systems.

The board would guide the Federal Transportation Administration’s safety agenda.
